More Fact Less fact

The Koshi Tappu wildlife reserve extends 175km to the north of a one kilometre long barrage that spans the Koshi River. The reserve was established in 1976 to protect the wild water buffaloes. The barrage, marshes, lagoons, mudflats and wetland offer excellent bird watching opportunities.

The nature walks through the Koshi Tappu wildlife reserve offer spectacular views of the Himalayan peaks including Makalu (8,463m), the 5th highest mountain in the world.

The Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is easily accessible by air, road and river. The flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar is only 45 minutes followed by an hour and a half drive. The reserve can also be reached by rafting down the Sun Koshi River. The third option would be to take the scenic drive along the meandering countryside road from Kathmandu (500km).
